The German group of game critics have cast their eyes and expertise over a plethora of games and revealed the full list of nominees.
Last year’s big winner was a Board Game Club favourite in Codenames and, whilst nominees can expect to see a lift in sales to 30-50k units, overall winners can expect to achieve 100,000 plus.
Here, without further ado, are the nominees:
Spiel des Jahres 2017 (the big one)
Kingdomino - The kingdom-building tile-laying game where you pay a Lord looking for new lands to expand the kingdom – match terrain to gain points.
Magic Maze – This is a co-operative game, all the characters are down on their luck and forced into a mass shoplift at the local shopping centre.
Race to El Dorado – Part race, part deck-building game you must make you way through jungle and meander bending rivers to become the first goldsmith.
Kinderspiel des Jahres 2017 (children’s game of the Year
Captain Silver – A quick fire grabby style game where you fetch your treasures from within the pirate bag.
Ice Cool – Put together the multiple boxes to create a penguin playing arena. Flick the characters around, the catcher chases the fish grabbing runners.
The Mysterious Forest – Help Jonas across the forest using dice and cards to prepare him for the journey to face the Queen of the Draconias.
Kennerspiel des Jahres 2017 (expert game of the year)
Exit: The Game – Bringing the escape room trend onto the tabletop there are three titles in the range – Pharaoh’s Tomb, Secret Lab and Abandoned Cabin.
Raiders of the North Sea – Combining logistical planning and plenty of looting this game is all about preparing and executing your Viking raid and impressing the chief.
Terraforming Mars – Played in the 2400’s, mankind and corporations are trying to transform the red planet. Play to raise the temperature, oxygen levels and the ocean coverage until its inhabitable. Co-operative play and points if your corporation makes the most impact.
